UK Billboard Advertising Just Had Its Best Second Quarter Ever
UK outdoor advertising earned £402.6m in Q2 2026, up 12.7% and a record for the quarter. What drove it, and what it means for a small business with £20.
Billboards were supposed to be old media. Nobody told the numbers.
UK outdoor advertising earned £402.6 million in the second quarter of 2026, according to Outsmart, the industry's trade body, with figures compiled by PwC. That is up 12.7% on a year earlier. Trade press reported it as the best second quarter on record.
What drove it
Digital screens. Digital outdoor revenue grew 14.6% in the quarter. Traditional paper posters grew too, by 8.8%. Both formats grew, and digital grew faster.
The World Cup. Big tournaments bring big brand campaigns, and the industry credits the FIFA World Cup with part of the growth. That part won't repeat every year, so don't treat 12.7% as the new normal.
Ads that people actually see. We've written before about how much online ad money goes to bots. A billboard is in one place, and the people walking past it are real. We think that is part of why outdoor is growing, though the revenue figures alone can't prove it.
For context, the same quarter last year shrank by about 1%, and the first half of 2025 was flat. The full year 2025 still set a record at £1.44 billion, after the second half grew. 2026 so far is growing much faster.
What it means if you're not a big brand
Most of that £402.6 million comes from national brands booking through agencies. Your local takeaway isn't moving that number, and neither are we. We're a very small part of it, and happy to say so.
But the record matters to you for three reasons.
1. The big advertisers are voting with their money. Brands with full research teams are putting more into billboards, not less.
2. Digital screens are where the growth is. Digital screens show many ads in rotation, so one screen can carry a national brand and a local barber on the same day. A paper poster can't do that. That rotation is why a small business can now buy a single screen by the day, for as long as it needs.
3. The front door is finally open. The traditional way to buy a billboard still means rate cards, two-week cycles and a minimum spend. Self-service screens skip all of it. On FameCake, a digital billboard costs from £10 a day, and most business ads go live within a day of payment.
- Through an agency
- Two-week cycles, booked months ahead
- Thousands of pounds a campaign
- On your phone
- By the day, live the same day
- From £10
What to watch
Outsmart publishes each quarter about two months after it ends, so the Q3 2026 figures should arrive around late November. Q3 2025 was £376.6 million, up 4.4%. The World Cup final was on 19 July, so only the start of Q3 had the tournament. Q3 will show whether the growth holds without it. We'll update this post when it lands.
